Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
